This type of grab bar configuration was designed to accomplish a certain goal. The patient needed two different support factors to use the bathtub. One was to maintain balance while getting into and out of the bathtub hence the vertical grab bar. Two, was to maintain support while standing in the bathtub. Hence the horizontal grab bar.

In this bathing area, the customer needed balance while getting in and out of the bathtub and leverage to assist in sitting down and standing up from the bathtub chair. The vertical handrail is for balance and the angled safety rail is provide additional leverage while sitting down and standing up from the portable chair (not shown in this picture).
